We have been ordering from AliExpress to the United States for over four years. In that time, we have dealt with lost packages, confusing tracking updates, frozen orders, and the occasional product that looked nothing like the listing photos. Through all of that, we learned what works and what to avoid.
This guide is based on our actual experience placing hundreds of orders. We cover account setup, shipping methods, payment options, tracking, customs, and returns so you can shop confidently without repeating our early mistakes.

Is AliExpress safe for U.S. buyers?
Yes, but you need to understand how the protection works.
AliExpress holds your payment until you confirm delivery. The seller does not receive money until you mark the order as received or the buyer protection period expires. If something goes wrong, you open a dispute and AliExpress mediates.
We have opened disputes three times over the years. Two were for items that never arrived, one was for a product that did not match the description. All three resulted in full refunds. The process took about a week each time.
The platform uses encrypted payment processing and supports PayPal on many listings, which adds another layer of protection.
How to create an AliExpress account
Go to AliExpress.com or download the app. Click Sign Up and register using your email, Google account, Apple ID, or phone number.
After registration, add your shipping address. Use English characters only and include your phone number. We learned this the hard way when a courier could not reach us and returned a package to the sender.
Set your country to United States and currency to USD. On desktop, these settings appear in the top-right corner. On the app, go to Account, then Settings, then Currency.
Shipping options for U.S. buyers
Shipping speed varies significantly depending on which method you choose. Here is what we have experienced with each option:
| Shipping Method | Typical Delivery Time | Tracking Quality | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| U.S. Warehouse | 3-7 days | Excellent | Fast delivery, no customs |
| AliExpress Standard | 7-15 days | Good | Most orders |
| Courier (DHL/FedEx/UPS) | 5-10 days | Excellent | High-value items |
| AliExpress Saver | 15-30 days | Limited | Cheap items, no rush |
U.S. warehouse shipping
U.S. warehouse shipping is the fastest option. Some sellers stock inventory in California, New York, Texas, and Kentucky. Filter for “Ship from: United States” when browsing to find these listings.
AliExpress Standard Shipping
AliExpress Standard Shipping is what we use for most orders. Packages transfer to USPS once they enter the United States, and tracking updates consistently.
Courier shipping
Courier shipping costs more but provides precise tracking and faster delivery. We use this for electronics or anything over $50.
Saver Shipping
Saver Shipping works for inexpensive items where waiting a month does not matter. Tracking updates are sparse, so expect some uncertainty.
Payment methods
AliExpress accepts multiple payment options:
- Visa, Mastercard, American Express
- PayPal (available on many listings)
- Apple Pay (in the app)
- AliPay
All payments are covered by buyer protection. We prefer PayPal when available because it adds an extra dispute option if needed.
One rule we follow strictly: never pay a seller outside the AliExpress platform, even if they offer a discount. Off-platform payments have zero protection.
Do U.S. buyers pay customs fees?
Almost never. The United States allows imports under $800 to enter duty-free under the de minimis threshold. We have never paid customs fees on a personal AliExpress order.
Orders above $800 or commercial shipments may incur duties, but this is uncommon for typical purchases.
How to track your order
The AliExpress app updates tracking faster than the website. Once your package enters the United States, it usually transfers to USPS for final delivery.
Here is what each tracking status actually means:
| Status | What It Means |
|---|---|
| Accepted by carrier | Seller handed package to shipping company |
| Departed from origin | Left China |
| Arrived at destination country | Package is in the USA |
| Clearing customs | Routine check, usually 1-3 days |
| Outbound from customs | Released, heading to USPS |
| Arrival at local distribution center | At USPS sorting facility |
| Out for delivery | Arrives today |
If tracking stalls for more than a week, try entering the tracking number on USPS.com or third-party sites like 17Track, ParcelsApp, or Cainiao Global.
Returns and refunds
Many AliExpress listings offer free returns within 15 days. Look for the “Free Return” badge on the product page.
For items without free returns, you can still open a dispute if:
Dispute options include full refund, partial refund, or replacement depending on the situation. Refunds typically process within 3-15 days.
Tips for buying smarter
These are the habits that have saved us money and headaches:
- Check seller ratings. We only buy from shops with 95% or higher positive feedback and at least a few hundred orders.
- Read buyer reviews and photos. Seller images are often edited. Buyer photos show the real product.
- Use coupons. AliExpress offers store coupons, platform coupons, and select coupons. Stack them when possible.
- Add items to your wish list. Prices fluctuate, and AliExpress notifies you when items drop.
- Avoid listings with no reviews. No sales history means no proof of quality or reliable delivery.
Best times to buy
AliExpress runs major sales throughout the year. We plan bigger purchases around these dates:
| Sale Event | When | Typical Discount |
|---|---|---|
| 11.11 Global Shopping Festival | November | 40-70% off |
| Anniversary Sale | March | 30-50% off |
| Black Friday / Cyber Monday | November | 30-60% off |
| Summer Sale | June-July | 20-40% off |
Prices during 11.11 are usually the lowest of the year, especially when combined with coupons.
